Shrieking Violets
El Mocambo
April 10
by Jim English
This trio of punk rock musicians from New York took to the stage with energy galore and Marshall amps a blarin'. The crowd was appreciative and seemed to enjoy the show but in typical TO fashion, never quite managed to lose control. Bassist Stephanie Saddler and guitarist The[a] K shared vocal duties, backed by the solid pounding of Tina Lew[n]es on la batterie. The drums were adorned with violets offering a nice balance to the vicious guitar slashings. One song dealt with the subject of rebellious parody called "That'll Show 'Em" which talks about would be rebels in leather and polo shirts. Fortune cookies and 45s were thrown as an offering to the hordes after the lovely "Bad Chinese Food," a little ditty about food poisoning. The Violets exhibited strong arrangement abilities and songwriting skills as well as a pretty good sound, something which separates them from many bands in their genre.
