QUEENS PROFILE / Stephanie Saddler

JOB

Art major at Hunter College, works as a volunteer in the Hunter College Art Gallery and at Reconstruction Records, a nonprofic record store in the East Village, member of an all-woman rock band called Shrieking Violets and looking to start a record label called Bee'swax Records.

BIOGRAPHY

21; born and raised in Astoria, plays bass guitar and sings, lives with her sister.

RESIDENCE

Home in Astoria.

LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT

'Our first record is coming out on Jan. 15. A lot of work went into that record and I did the artwork for it. It's only a seven-inch with four songs but it's still a big deal for us because it represents two years worth of work.'

CURRENT FOCUS

'I'm getting a degree to be an art teacher and I plan to be a teacher in the city. And, at the same time, I'm very involved in my music and the band is a form of self-expression. Basically, we're a group of women who are concerned about what's happening around us and that's reflected in our music. Most of our performances are benefits, money's not an issue. And I decided to be a teacher because I think I'll be effective and I'll be able to relate to the kids. I didn't particularly like the style of teaching when I was in high school; it was too authoritarian.'

BEST THING ABOUT QUEENS

'The food. There's a lot of ethnic food here that you just can't find anywhere else. Also, the art scene is pretty good.'

GRIPE

'The fact that there's no recycling center in my neighborhood. I have to bring my garbage into Manhattan to a recycling center. And the subway system also bothers me a lot.

Dear Newsday:

I think that you might be interested in printing a "Queens Profile" column on my friend, Stephanie Saddler. She is 21 and lives in Astoria, and is one of the hardest-working people I know.

She has basically been supporting herself since she was 15, and now she is a full-time student (art major) at Hunter College. She is putting herself through college with work-study, scholarships and financial aid. She also does volunteer work in the Hunter Art Gallery and at Reconstruction Records, New York's only volunteer-run, non-profit record store.

We are in a band together called Shrieking Violets, and now Stephanie and a couple of friends are planning to start their own record label called Beeswax Records. They are planning to donate all profits from their first release (a compilation of local bands) to a rape crisis center.

Please feel free to call me if you would like additional information. My daytime number is [redacted]. Stephanie's home number is [redacted].

Thanks, in advance, for your time.

Sincerely,

Thea Kacalanos
