Violin Outbreak
Issue #11, "Still Feb."
The Shrieking Violets ----> live
Tues. Aug 29th The Continental
[Thea's note: I believe the day or date listed above is wrong, but I'm not sure of the correct one. It's not clear when this fanzine was printed, but the issue contains a few references to 1993. The only "Tuesday August 29th" Shrieking Violets could have played was in 1995, but this date isn't listed in my gig book. Assuming this issue came out in Feb. '93, then they're reviewing a show from August '92, but I don't have a record of a Continental show in August '92 either. Very puzzling.
In the reviewer's favor, they did save one of our stickers and the candy wrappers and incorporate them into the decorative page border. :-) ]
Som[e]times sombre and sometimes perky, this band has a lot of potential. I feel that many of th[ei]r songs are very interesting and that they have a nifty sound. Thea's guitar style alternates between a buzzy, grindy, kind of attack and melodic note playing. Stephanie's bass playing is deep toned and at times gloomy while both Thea and Stephanie's high pitched singing pushes its way above the noise and when they sing at the same time it sounds really GOOD. Tina's drumming is done in an exciting, chunky style that gives meat and bite to the overall sound. All in all, Shrieking Violets are a good live band with lots to hold your interest, and have a truly refreshing, honest sincerity that is sorely missed in most bands today. A highlight of the show was when Thea threw out what she called "bad chinese candy" to the audience after the song BAD CHINESE FOOD. The Shrieking Violets are very much worth seeing. Keep an eye out for 'em!
